I want you to know that these numbers will to a great extent, determine the fate of every student aspiring to gain admission into these listed schools.
Every institution has a carrying capacity. What is a carrying capacity?
This is the strength of each school in terms of facilities, staff strength, and some other things.
The university with the highest carrying capacity in Nigeria is Ahmadu Bello University (above 10,000 admitted yearly).
When you know this, it gives you an idea of how to fuel your preparation.
NOTE: Admission into most of Nigeria's universities is guaranteed when you score high and make the merit list.
2. Understand the competition in your chosen course:
As there are competitive schools, there are competitive courses also. Courses like medicine, law, pharmacy, accounting, mechanical engineering, etc., are very competitive.
Thousands of candidates apply for these courses in each school yearly. So, if you are choosing any of these courses, you must prepare very well.
Statistically, some systems have higher candidates than others. It is now left to you to know the number of applicants aspiring to study the same method as you in your preferred institution.
These numbers will give you an idea of what you are up against. I remember in 2015, the total number of applicants that chose to study accounting and scored above 200 was over 10,000 in my school.
However, this number was reduced after post- UTME as some applicants scored below the required cut-off mark for accounting and the school.
3. Know the required cut-off mark of the institution, and most especially that of your chosen course: every higher institution in Nigeria have their benchmark and cut-off mark. You are now left to determine the cut-off mark or benchmark your preferred institution is likely to use.
You can get this information from the internet or, better still, from aspirants' group chats on social media. Contrary to public opinion that the general cut-off mark for universities is 200.
This is not so, it is advisable to score far higher than 200 if you are going to make the merit list of these schools, and of course, as you already know, merit lists guarantee your admission. Let me quickly tell you a secret… this is how cut-off mark marketing is calculated in one of the Nigerian universities.
Your UTME score will be divided by eight and eight post UTME scores by 2. Your cut-off mark is the sum of this division.
For example, a student that scored 200 in UTME has automatically scored 200/8 = 25. The student was able to achieve 60 in post UTME that will be 60/2 = 30. the sum will give the student a total score of 55, which might not be enough to make the merit list of law, accounting, medicine, or mechanical engineering.
I hope you understand why you need a high UTME score and knowledge of each course cut-off mark for your preferred institution.
5. Understand the Admission Policy: The federal government policy states that institutions should admit candidates based on......
