People living with Diabetes should NEVER WALK BAREFOOT EVEN IN THEIR HOMES. Thread.

Diabetes destroys the nerves in the foot which can lead to decreased sensations, so they don't know they may be injured

It also destroys arteries which affect Oxygen delivery needed for healing

The combination of reduced oxygen and increased blood sugar creates an environment that makes it difficult for wounds to heal

These wounds become infected because the high sugar encourages germs to grow

All these may lead to that part of the foot dying and needing to be cut off They can help their foot by;

Checking for cuts or bruises EVERY DAY

NEVER wash the foot in HOT WATER

Never wear tight shoes

Walk often

Cut your toenails smoothly and remove any sharp edges

Ask your doctor to look at it every time you visit the hospital

Take your drugs

It's better to buy footwear in the late afternoon when the feet are at their largest rather than in the morning when they seem smaller

Moisturize your feet daily to prevent them from getting dry

Wear sandals with Velcro fasteners rather than buckles. Buckles could injure the feet

Your shoes should have a soft insole to create a warm and comfy atmosphere for the feet and they should never be pointed.

For people with diabetes, the major thing is comfort and not how beautiful the shoe looks.

Comfort is important.

Check your feet every year with your doctor.

Report any soreness or discoloration as soon as possible to your doctor for prompt treatment.

This thread will help someone's parent out there, please share this with everyone. Thank you.
